Rangoli is an art where patterns are created on the ground or floor using materials such as colored rice, dried flour, colored sand, or flower petals. It is usually done during special occasions like Diwali, Onam, Pongal, and other Hindu festivals in the Indian subcontinent. Rangoli designs are passed from one generation to the next generation. Rangoli designs are simple geometric shapes, prints of deities, or shapes of flowers and petals, but they are also very extensive designs made by many people. The base material is usually dry or wet powdered rice or dry flour and other natural colors can be added. Other materials include colored sand, red brick dust, and even flowers and petals, as in the case of flower Rangolis. The purpose of Rangoli is to decorate our surroundings and it is considered to bring good luck. Design types can also vary, reflecting traditions, folklore, and practices that are unique to each area. It is usually done by girls or women. Sometimes boys also participate. This practice is exhibited on occasions like festivals, marriage celebrations, auspicious celebrations, and other similar milestones and gatherings.
